Lesson: Customizing

30 minutes

Standards:

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.6.3 / CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.7.3 / CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.8.3 / CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.9-10.3: Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences.

Learning Objectives:

1) Students will learn various artistic techniques for customizing the aesthetic of their Nanodek.
2) Students will learn to make digital vision boards to create a narrative for their design.
3) Students will have an experience in making a decision that will affect the outcome of their Nanodek.

Lesson Outcome:

Students will have customized and personalized Nanodeks that are ready to ride, along with a digital vision board and written narrative to showcase their inspiration.

Materials:

  • Nanodek Kit
  • Computer with internet access and software to paste images and create text (such as Word)
  • Any additional art supplies

Lesson:

1) Skateboard graphics come in a variety of different forms and styles.

2) Create digital vision boards (10-15 minutes)

Students can use the internet to search for skateboard graphics and copy-paste the images into a document as a “vision board”, to help get inspiration. A vision board is a collection of images (and words) that is meant to inspire and clarify a goal.

In addition to boards, students can add other imagery, colors, and text to their vision boards.

3) Artistic techniques (5-10 minutes)

(If students have not yet finished their vision boards, that is okay, as they can be completed as homework.)

There are various techniques for customizing your Nanodek (instructor may share images of art in the following media or demonstrate techniques to provide examples):

a) Colored pencils: included in the Nanodek kit, students can use colored pencils to draw on the bottom and top of their Nanodek. Be mindful of stroke direction (direction you move the colored pencil) when creating art - you may want it consistent (all same direction).

b) Markers & pens: markers and pens create a different look and style to the Nanodek.

c) Stickers: students can apply stickers to their Nanodek. They can also print their own or cut out designs, images, and text from magazines. They can use the glue in the Nanodek kit to apply their “stickers” to their Nanodek. Instructor to demonstrate this process for students.

d) Other interesting media can include crayon, spray paint, glitter, and more.

4) Students may not finish their artwork within the 30-minute lesson (or even start), depending on how much the instructor would like to demonstrate techniques. Students are encouraged to finish their customization on their own time, without a time constraint.

Homework:

*Finish your vision boards and finish customizing your Nanodek.*

Comprehension Demonstration Questions:

1) What’s the purpose of a vision board?

Answer: To help collect, organize, and inspire ideas.

2) What inspired your Nanodek’s custom look? Describe your path to customizing your Nanodek in 1-2 paragraphs.
